Why People UsePseudonyms(艺名)
Youcan’t choose the name you are given at birth, but in many countries you canchange it legally when you reach adulthood. Of course, most people never changetheir names even if they feel____31____about them. However, some people do takethis course of ____32____—particularly artists! What makes an artist want tochange their name? Sometimes it’s for purely personal____33____reasons, such asthe Nobel Prize winning poet from Chile, Neftalii Reyes. He didn’t want hisfather to know he was writing poetry, so he changed his name to Pablo Nerudawhen he was a young man. At other times the reason may appear strange; take thecase of the Portuguese poet Fernando Pessoa, who wrote under 75 differentnames. The reason? “When I use a different name, I always write in a differentway,” he explained. In most cases, however, people do it for____34____,historical, political, or cultural reasons. Here are some of the most common.
Theperson’s real name is just too long and difficult to remember. Let’s be honest,Madonna Louise Ciccone is not as easy to remember as just ____35____“Madonna”.And short names are much easier to remember: William Bradley became Brad Pittand Edson Arantes do Nascimento became Pele.
Sometimes names are changed for marketing purposes. For example, if a name sounds too “foreign”, it may be changed to somethingthat is more ____36____in a market. So in the film world, Ramon Estevez ____37____the name Martin Sheen. Or maybe the artist’s real name doesn’t sound veryattractive—Chad Everett does sound a lot better than Raymond Cramton.
Artistssometimes choose the name of someone they admire. Robert Zimmerman changed hisname to Boo Dylan because of his ____38____ for the Welsh poet, Dylan Thomas.
Anotherreason may be ____39____in the past, women foundit very difficult to get published. To avoid this situation, they sometimesgave themselves men’ s names. So the English author Mary Ann Evans becameGeorge Eliot, and she did get her books ____40____!
【答案】J A E K E    I C B G H

Bellwas 39 years old when Conan Doyle first attended one of his lectures. He is saidto have walked with great energy. His nose and chin were angular and his eyestwinkled with intelligent humour. Bell, who was a brilliant doctor, liked writingpoetry, playing sport and bird-watching.

WALKING   BACK

                                Everest  Blog
Day 1 --- Am I mad ?
Ifirst heard of  “Show Racism the Red Card”when a friend asked me to sign a petition(请愿书)supporting their work. Basically, it’s an organization which uses professionalfootballers to help fight racism in sport and society. A few weeks later, heasked me if I wanted to do a bit more for them. I thought he probably meant forme to give money or do some voluntary work. But then he told me that a group ofabout 20 people were getting sponsored to play the highest ever game of rugbyat 5,140 meters on Mount Everest. Well, to cut a long story short, tomorrow I’moff to Nepal. Wish me luck.
Day 4 --- Uphill all the way
Were making our way up tothe base camp thatswhere most climbers start their final climb to the top and then, well play our game. There’sone thing I’ve learned pretty quickly. If you walk too fast at high altitude(高度), you get really short of breath. There’s not much oxygen, and you have todo  everything slowly. Today we startedout at 8 am. We had to cross three suspension bridges . One of them was so highthat you couldnt see the bottom. Then wewalked through some beautiful forest areas before we started a two-hour uphillhike to Namche Bazaar. It was really tough and most of us had headaches when wearrived. Tomorrow we’re going to have a rest day. I need one!
Day 11 --- The game
Todaywe played our game. It was supposed to be a friendlygame, and last night, we had agreed wedjust walk and not run. However, it was a really heated game and two playerswere even sent off. We only played for 14 minutes. I think someone would havegot hurt if wed played any longer! Myteam won and I scored the last try! Of course, none of this matters. Whatsreally important is that we did it and we’ve raised a load of money. It feelsamazing.

Scholarsand students have always been great travelers. The official case for “academicmobility” is now often stated in impressive terms as a fundamental necessityfor economic and social progress in the world, and debated in the areas ofEurope, but it is certainly nothing new. Serious students were always ready togo abroad in search of the best teachers and the most famous academies; insearch of the purest philosophy, the most effective medicine, the likeliestroad to gold
Mobility of this kindmeant also mobility of ideas, their moving across borders, their simultaneousimpact upon many groups of people. The point of learning is to share it,whether with students or with colleagues; one thinks that only eccentrics haveno interest in being credited with a striking discovery, or a new technique. Itmust also have been comforting to know that other people in other parts of theworld were about to make the same discovery or were thinking along the samelines, and that one was not quite alone, faced by question, ridicule orneglect.
In the twentiethcentury, and particularly in the last 20 years, the old footpaths of thewandering scholars have become vast highways. The vehicle which has made thispossible has of course been the aeroplane, making contact between scholars evenin the most distant places immediately available, and providing for the veryrapid transmission of knowledge.
Apart from the vehicleitself, it is fairly easy to identify the main factors which have brought aboutthe recent explosion in academic movement. Some of these are purelyquantitative and require no further mention: there are far more centers oflearning, and a far greater number of scholars and students.
In addition one mustrecognize the very considerable increase of all kinds of subjects, particularlyin the sciences, which by widening the total area of advanced studies hasproduced an enormous number of specialists whose particular interests areprecisely defined. These people would work in some isolation if they were notable to keep in touch with similar isolated groups in other countries.
63.It can be concluded from the passagethat"academic mobility"_____.
A.meansthe friendship formed by scholars on the trip
B.isa program carried out by governments
C.hasbeen put great emphasis on in the world
D.meansgoing abroad in search of the best teachers
64.In the view of the author,if a scholar has a newidea about a particular thing he should________.
A.keepit a secret                       B.sellit for money
C.abandonit without being proved         D.shareit with others
65.The underlined words “considerable multiplicationsof disciplines” in the last paragraph refers to_____________.
A.a great number of stricter teaching methods
B.boarder cooperation among scholars
C.enormous rules for academic studies
D.an increase in the number of fields of knowledge
66.According to the passage, travel is necessary forspecialists in that_____.
A.it is good for them to define their interestsprecisely
B.it is a good way for them to relax
C.it helps them avoid working in isolation
D.it can make them feel less lonely
【答案】C D D C
IV.Summary Writing
Directions: Read the following passage. Summarizethe main idea and the main point(s) of the passage in no more than 60 words.Use your own words as far as possible.
Byalmost any measure, there is a boom in Internet-based instruction. In just afew years,34 percent of American universities have begun offering some form of distancelearning (DL), and among the larger schools,it's closer to 90 percent. If youdoubt the popularity of the trend, you probably haven't heard of the Universityof Phoenix. It grants degrees entirely on the basis of online instruction. Itenrolls 90,000 students, a statistic used to support its claim to be thelargest private university in the country.
Whilethe kinds of instruction offered in these programs will differ, DL usually signifiesa course in which the instructors post syllabi (课程大纲),reading assignments, and schedules on Websites, and students send in their assignmentsby e-mail. Generally speaking, face-to-face communication with an instructor isminimized or eliminated altogether.
Theattraction for students might at first seem obvious. Primarily, there's the conveniencepromised by courses on the Net: you can do the work, as they say, in yourpajamas (睡衣). But figures indicate that thereduced effort results in a reduced commitment to the course. While dropoutrates for all freshmen at American universities is around 20 percent, the ratefor online students is 35 percent. Students themselves seem to understand the weaknessesinherent in the setup. In a survey conducted for eComell, the DL division of ComellUniversity, less than a third of the respondents expected the quality of theonline course to be as good as the classroom course.
Clearly, from the schools' perspective, there's a lot of money to be saved. Although someof the more ambitious programs require new investments in servers and networksto support collaborative software, most DL courses can run on existing orminimally upgraded(升级)systems. The more studentswho enroll in a course but don't come to campus, the more the school saves onkeeping the lights on in the classrooms, paying doorkeepers, and maintainingparking lots. And there's evidence that instructors must work harder to run aDL course for a variety of reasons, they won't be paid any more, and might wellbe paid less.
答案;
Online learning becomes more and morepopular. For students, they can laern whenever and wherever it is convenientfor them, but they hope its quality can be imoproved. For teachers, it can savemoney because they don’t need to pay for money for classroom and people workingin campus.
